When Sparks Fly: the Origin of Inspiration
I love asking my clients this question.
Really think about it:
When did that spark of an idea/activity/concept/change/ project/...what-have-you... begin?
I am guessing that the origin of whatever lights you up cannot be traced on a linear path. Perhaps you had a flash of it years ago and it's just starting to come into form now. Just as life has it's twists and turns, ups and downs, so does the thing(s) that really makes your heart sing. And I dare say, it's still evolving. Maybe what you were once passionate about has since expanded into a new direction(s)?
People often ask me how I started my handbag business. And, I always say that the spark of it started in 1998 and my roommate came home from work one day, tossed her very masculine, utilitarian laptop bag down on the couch and said, "we've got to design a cuter laptop bag."I will never forget that day. Even though I wouldn't take the plunge with my own handbag company until 2005, the seed was planted that day.
But when I really think about it, the roots of it started much earlier: My mother will tell you that by age 3, I was adamant that I chose my own clothes to wear each day. As a teenager, I took a sewing class so I could learn to sew designs I couldn't find in the stores. In college, I majored in my own "customized" degree, "Sociology of Dress," and then obtained my Masters Degree in the "History of Dress." So the thread of fashion was always there, in some shape or form.
And, when I did start my handbag company, I knew it had to be about more than just handbags. They had to not only look sophisticated and unique, but also be highly functional and solve problems. (I can't tell you how many times I battled with factories, marketers, advisors and sales reps on this, but that's a story for another time.) The handbag path led me to realize that I love the creative process, and I am passionate in helping others bring their passion and dreams to life.
So there it is: my circuitous path that from fashion designer to someone who loves to work with people to ignite change and creativity in their lives.
So, I now invite you to take some time to explore within:
What's Your Thing?
Even if it seems completely impractical, "already been done", crazy, impossible, or all the myraid excuses we come up with to avoid going there. Perhaps you can cut yourself a bit of slack and be ok that you don't have all the how's, when's or what's lined up? Instead, what if you took some time to imagine, dream or muse on this idea or change you want to make?
What's possible if you gave yourself some space to let this spark expand?
Let me know what you discover from spending some time with these questions.
And, if you find you might need some support while you start on this path of expansion, please know I am here.
I can't wait to hear what lights YOU up!
